If this one produces seed, you should be able to tell if they have a chance.. While the largest would flower & produce seed often, most seed i’d collect were empty or basically liquid when opened. The only mature ( and flowering /seeding ) specimens i’m currently familiar with are those in Kopsick’s collection. Floribunda had some f2 foxy ladies a while ago. You did not get a palm that was basically bare root and a palm you specifically said you did not want!!! You got an amazing holy grail palm at a discount price.
Foxyladies hold the variegation when mature. Here are a few slightly variegated ones. They seem to have an overall hard time surviving. The only exception, would be the ones that are extremely variegated. Erik, the Foxtails were planted many months before the F1 Foxyladies.

  • These foxy lady palms are thirsty and it’s nearly impossible to overwater them.
  • That thing is so root bound that you need to do slow drip like they do or just plant it.
  • One is variegated and the other is not??
  • It’s a bad combination for the palm to deal with root trauma and to fight full scorching sun at the same time.
  • What I have noticed is that the width of the foxylady leaves tend to be a little wider and a little more dark hairs on the leaf bases.
  • I’m encouraged to see some growth of the spear, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

From the pic seems like your palm flew across the country unharmed. Actually,light variegation is not a bad thing. Premier has sargentii seedlings and 7gal vinifera but they don’t know how to ship. I am lousy at keeping seedlings alive let alone sargentii seedlings!
Regardless, good luck and hopefully you’ll be able to get a hold of this great palm sooner rather than later.. Bigger ” seeder ” at Kopsick sits close to where the collection’s Veitchia grove is located. I have little doubt that had it been spring, or this time of year, germination likely would have succeeded.

I wonder if the very elongated seed has more Veitchia traits and the more rounded F2 seed has the foxtail traits? Typically I find the F1 does have the hybrid vigor, except when they are very variegated. Only the variegated FL produced viable seed so far, but none of the seedlings are variegated.

I have an f2 foxy lady I might be interested in letting go if you are interested I can come pick up that palm at your convenience,deliver you $200 cash, plus the 3 Pseudophoenix seedlings in the pic if you would be interested in selling. I have got palms from Flouibunda and jungle music and never had the problem I had with this palm of you are going to ship palms at least learn how to pack them!!! I never said the palm looked bad I said it was basically bare root and variegated which I specifically said I didn’t want!!! He is the only one to have a problem with their foxy lady order, and started to complain even before it was delivered. 1 of each 3 and 7 is slightly variegated with 2 of each being greens.

Foxy Lady in Trouble!

Call me anytime to chat about transplanting palms. They say the foxy lady is a rocket but the growth rate appears to be the same as seedlings. Yep, I was told it’s the mother plant genes that determine the fruit/seed so you can’t tell an F1 hybrid without growing it!

I do need to get better on checking my palm talk tho! Purchased several years ago as a seedling from a breeder in Florida. Where did that palm originate? I hope/expect some new batches to hit the market sometime soon.

That thing is so root bound that you need to do slow drip like they do or just plant it. Most likely a resold Rancho Soledad plant or a Florida import from Sparkman. But if there is actually “zero” movement, your palm is probably foxy gold already dead. Even in the slowest sickliest palm, you should notice some movement of the spear – even 1/8 of an inch in a week assures that your palm is still alive.
The pool fence isn’t nearly high enough for any shade for the entire plant, and it looks like the leaves are getting full sun most of the day, probably with low humidity. 300+ palms, 90+ species in the ground Another possibility that could be of concern is, if it was pot grown and roots had exited the drain holes and anchored into the ground, they may have been severed when lifting the pot from the ground.   • If you do the 24hr soak thing, put a weak solution of seaweed extract in the water too.
  • The only exception, would be the ones that are extremely variegated.
  • If you meant the spear has not moved at all, then your palm was in trouble from day one.

I believe most of the time the seeds never germinate but very occasionally they do. I have some flowering/fruiting foxtails near an adonidia doing the same. I have a couple of completely green ones in my yard and there isn’t a bit of variegation
The seed looks pretty elongated, so I would think it would have a lot of Vetchia characteristics. Maybe something I might try to track as time goes on. Look how elongated this viable F2 seed is, that I picked up yesterday.
Will the seed look like the one you show above, or is that just the f2? I didn’t notice it until after the seedling got bigger… I have a Butia x Jubaea F2 that looks exactly like a Butia and growth speed is very similar to Butia.
This is a holy grail palm for many of us PTers. Going to a spot in the Los Angeles area If you know anyone looking who would make a good palm parent send em my way. It’s in a 15 gal but it ideally should go in the ground soon, it’s filled in that pot already. Alas, the time has come.
